Steel Town

Steel Town, a suite of three wall sculptures was produced for the exhibition Qualia or The Feel of Steel, curated by Ingrid Mayrhofer. A celebration of 100 Years of steel manufacture in Hamilton Ontario, the exhibition “explored the steadfast imprint of steel on Hamilton. In their research, the artists conducted site visits to steel processing plants, scrap yards, historical sites, and brown fields. The resulting artworks respond to steel as a material, an idea, a process, an element, and reach beyond the visual tropes of the post-industrial space and time.” Steel Town, shown at b contemporary art gallery, Hamilton, compressed imagined moments from the steel industry. Shipping and Receiving, Blast Furnace, and Smoke and Water comprise poetic shorthand that evokes the history and culture of steel town the site visits and industrial landscape surrounding the City of Hamilton. Fabricated by plasma-cutting hot-rolled steel.
