A decorative canopy and fence Inter Weave is a functional sculpture for the outdoor space linking the buildings at 80 Mill Street Toronto. Located in the distillery district the sculptures respond to the historic context by reflecting patterns from the era. In the historical buildings of the former Gooderham & Worts distillery there is an austere aesthetics which derives from their original pragmatic purpose of blending, aging and storing fine whiskey. The function of the buildings determined their structure giving rise to repetitive elements and patterning evident both on the facades and throughout the interiors. My design objectives were to create functional works that integrate aesthetically with the historical and contemporary buildings at Gooderham & Worts responding to the complex relationship between the historical and contemporary layers of the site.
