About
Judith Katherin Schwarz is a practicing artist and art educator, nationally recognized for her sculpture, public works and drawing. She has successfully completed large-scale public commissions in Toronto and Vancouver that invite the public to pay attention to their environment.
Schwarz is noted for her sculptural wall-works that have been exhibited across Canada. Internationally she has exhibited at the Canadian Embassy Gallery in Tokyo, Japan, the Freedman Gallery in Reading, Pennsylvania and the Jan Cunen Museum in Oss, Netherlands. Schwarz has developed projects through artist residencies including the Paris Studio, Open Studio Print Shop, the McIntyre Ranch in Southern Alberta and Artscape in Sydney, Australia. She has also contributed to the art community as a board member to various public art institutions such as Mercer Union Gallery, C Magazine, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Open Studio and the Koffler Center for the Arts. Currently she is a Board Member of the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, Kelowna, BC.
As an Associate Professor at York University, Schwarz developed undergraduate curriculum and facilitated learning in a digital environment. Her roles included MFA Graduate Program Director, Chair of the Department of Visual Art and Art History and Associate Dean Academic for the School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design.
Currently a Professor Emeritus, works in progress include an artist bookwork based on conceptual drawings for sculpture and an exploration of clay. In the fall of 2021 Schwarz completed an Independent Residence, Leighton Artist Studios at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Alberta. Her upcoming shows include Ramble On, UBCO Permanent Collection, January 2022 at the Vernon Public Art Gallery, BC.
